Baking soda has many uses. We explain how and what you can use it for.
All-purpose cleaner#
You can make a natural all-purpose cleaner with baking soda. For kitchen and bathroom use, mix 5 tbsp baking soda and 2 tbsp grated soap flakes into 5 litres of water. You have replaced chemical cleaners with an effective, natural alternative.

Clogged drain#
If you have baking soda and vinegar at home, you do not need expensive drain cleaner! Sprinkle half a cup of baking soda into the drain, add half a cup of vinegar on top, and let it foam. After letting it work for 10 minutes, pour 1 litre of boiling water down the drain. Do not hold your face directly over the drain — it can splash!

Baking powder substitute#
You can easily replace baking powder with baking soda. For 500 g of flour, use 5 g of baking soda. However, you should also add an acid so the dough can rise. Mix 6 tbsp vinegar into the dough. Do not worry — baking soda neutralises the taste of vinegar so you will not notice it.

Washing fruit and vegetables#
You should always wash fruit and vegetables before eating. With baking soda, you can do this more thoroughly. It is simple! Place fruit and vegetables in a bowl of water, add 2 tsp baking soda, let sit for two to three minutes, then wash as usual.

Make your own deodorant#
You can easily make your own deodorant with baking soda. You only need a few ingredients: 3 tbsp coconut oil, 2 tbsp baking soda, and optionally a few drops of essential oil such as lavender for fragrance. Mix everything together, transfer to a clean jar, and let it set. It works best if you keep it in the fridge and take it out when you need it.

An effective foot bath#
You can use baking soda for a foot bath. Dissolve 4 tbsp in a basin of warm water. This foot bath helps with sweaty feet and prevents athlete’s foot. For a pleasant scent, add a few drops of essential oil such as mint or thyme.
Baking soda can do all these wonderful things — and much more. You can even make your own deodorant from baking soda. I will share that recipe in the coming days.
