Here are the ten most poisonous animals in the world — and why you should watch out for them.
1. Box jellyfish#
Despite its misleading name, the box jellyfish is an absolute killer. It is a jellyfish with long tentacles covered in thousands of stinging cells. They burst at the slightest touch and penetrate deep into the skin. The very potent venom attacks the nervous system and causes respiratory and muscle paralysis. Within minutes, the heart stops and the victim dies. Around 70 people die from this jellyfish every year.
2. Poison dart frog#
The poison dart frog is the most poisonous frog species in the world. It is found only in a small area of Colombia. Touching this colourful frog can cause death from heart, respiratory, and muscle failure. The poison comes from eating tropical insects — so when these frogs are fed differently in captivity, they lose their toxicity. With their venom, these small frogs can kill up to 20 people.
3. Crust anemone#
With a 50 percent probability, 0.01 milligrams of crust anemone venom can kill an adult human. Death is notably agonising, with paralysis of the entire muscular system, vomiting, discomfort, and chills. No antidote has been found yet.
4. Cone snail#
The cone snail’s shell is popular among divers, which is why many of them die. One drop of venom is enough to kill up to 20 people. Victims suffer extreme pain, breathing and vision problems, and even muscle paralysis.
5. Sydney funnel-web spider#
As the name suggests, this spider species lives in Sydney. It sometimes seeks shelter in people’s homes during storms and rain. Males are six times more venomous than females. Their venom can be deadly to humans and acts directly on the nervous system, causing sudden muscle paralysis.
6. Dubois’s sea snake#
The bite of this snake is particularly nasty. After the bite, you feel nothing at first, but after about half an hour nausea sets in. Then the arms and legs become paralysed and breathing stops. The death struggle can last up to three days. Fortunately, there is an antidote — but it must be administered quickly.
7. Stingray#
A stingray is not as harmless as it looks. It has a long venomous spine with barbs. They usually stay on the seabed. When threatened, they defend themselves with their spine. A sting can cause severe bleeding and may be fatal.
8. Yellow Mediterranean scorpion#
It belongs to the most dangerous scorpion species in the world. The venom of a yellow Mediterranean scorpion rarely kills adults, but the sting is very painful. The poison often leads to allergic reactions.
9. King cobra#
The king cobra is the most dangerous snake species in the world. One bite is enough to kill more than ten people. With a single bite, they can also kill an adult elephant. Within minutes after the bite, the venom leads to death.
10. Blue-ringed octopus#
When the blue-ringed octopus feels threatened, bright blue rings appear on its body. If you see that, you should move away immediately. A bite from this octopus causes instant respiratory paralysis and suffocation. If the victim is ventilated until the venom wears off, there is a chance of survival. However, no effective antidote has been found.
